In light of recent events, we have spent a great deal of time teaching the importance of good hygiene and hand washing. The children particularly enjoyed the activity where we painted the germs on our hands and then shook hands with each other. It was fascinating to see how the germs transferred to each other. We then showed the children the best way to wash their hands and how long for. Now we hear a very tuneful happy birthday repeated every time they wash their hands for snack!

We have also been planting the first seeds in our lovely vegetable beds. The children explained their knowledge, telling us the plants needed sun and water to help them grow. We are lucky enough to have this small enclosed garden, to use for digging and planting, along with our larger play garden and playground area. Every day we aim to get outside for a run around and some fresh air.

The children are enjoying lots of spring time activities before we break for Easter, making cards, craft activities and some Easter baking.

If you have a child aged between 2 and school age, please contact us to discuss our setting and your needs for childcare. We are a small, friendly setting and have both local children and children from further afield attending.

We have been doing lots baking with the children this half term. They have enjoyed weighing, mashing, cutting and mixing the ingredients, to create tasty treats to enjoy during our sociable group snack times.

We have also enjoyed getting out in this fresh, but chilly, air.  We have used our sheltered sand pit and play house to shelter under during the odd rain shower. Although, when the storms have been particularly bad, we’ve stayed in and entertained ourselves for hours with den building.  There’s so much fun to be had, using the blankets, sheets, cushions and fabrics to make cosy dens to sit for stories under and use the torches for exploring.

In our rising 5s PE sessions, the children have especially enjoyed using the equipment to climb, balance and jump from.  They are gaining such confidence when moving around and being in the school hall is really helping to ready them for their transition to school.

With Christmas seeming a distant memory, we welcomed back all the children, along with some new ones, in January. They have enjoyed telling their friends about all their lovely gifts and the wonderful experiences they have shared over the festive period.

Out PE sessions are now in full swing.  This is such a unique but valuable experience we are able to offer to our children.  They have enjoyed running, kicking and catching a ball and balancing in the first few sessions.  These sessions not only aid the transition to school but also is a great way for the children to exercise in the safe environment of the school hall.

Although the weather has been a little unsettled, we have managed to get outside most days.  Of course, this is aided with puddle suits and Wellington boots! It’s great for the children to spend time in our outside spaces and in the fresh air.

January 20

Happy new year from all of us at Sturminster Marshall Pre-school.

We had a very busy December. The children enjoyed lots of Christmas crafts including making their tree decoration for the Christmas tree festival at St Mary’s church.  The glitter has been out and we’re still finding it everywhere even now!

Our Christmas nativity was a huge success, with all children taking part, singing and dressing up.  They did a superb job.

The children had great fun at their Christmas party.  Party games, Christmas crafts, party food and, of course, Father Christmas!

January brings the new P.E. Sessions for our rising 5’s.  This is perfect for ensuring a smooth transition into school and helps with school readiness.

October 19

It has been a busy start to the term, welcoming the children back, and some new families, into preschool.  It’s amazing to see how quickly they all settle back into the routines of the setting.

We have made the most of the continued warmer weather, spending time out in our playground, enjoying some new toys and joining in with ring games.  Inside, the children have enjoyed the home corner and playing with the dolls and pushchairs.    We have learnt a new song for our circle time, which the children have learnt very quickly.  We’ve introduced ‘story of the week,’ and the children have been very enthusiastic when joining in with activities related to these stories.

We are already beginning school readiness with our preschoolers.  This includes encouragement when trying new things and promoting independence.  It’s scary to already be thinking about school but it comes around so quickly, and we want this transition to go as smoothly as possible.

If you have a child aged between 2 and school age please contact us to discuss our setting and your needs for childcare.  We are a small, friendly setting and have both local children and children from further afield attending.  Great friendships are made at Sturminster Marshall Preschool, many lasting well beyond the years of education.

November 19

The children have now settled well into the term, with the 6 weeks holidays being a distant memory now.  The autumn changes have been welcomed by most.  We have discussed the changes in colour of the leaves and talked about harvest time.

We have done plenty on leaf collecting to make collages and leaf rubbings, and walking around the village to collect conkers.

The change in the weather has sometimes caused us to dash under the shelter between rain storms, but with some wellies and a rain coat, we have managed to spend a lot of time outside still.

The children have really enjoyed our ‘story of the week’.  One week we spent time baking gingerbread men, using the timers to time how long it took the gingerbread man to run away and made our role play into our very own bakery.

The next week, we climbed Jacks beanstalk and ended up in a castle on top of the clouds.  The children noticed the difference in size between the giants huge household items and those little ones in Jacks house.  The children really learn the stories and can re-tell them in great detail, when they have had these immersive experiences.

We have also spent time making spooky decorations for our Halloween party.
